The three main whale and dolphin watching areas in Sri Lanka are Mirissa in the south-west, Trincomalee in the north-east and Kalpitiya on the northwest coast. In Mirissa, the best time for whale watching is from November to April; in Trincomalee, the best time is from May to September as whales continue their migrations around the island from the south coast. The season in Kalpitiya officially begins in November and continues until April.Out of these months December, January and April are the peak months of sightings. There is very good chance of spotting Blue Whales and great chances of Sperm Whales. Also, over a dozen species of dolphin live in the waters in and around Sri Lanka, ranging from huge pilot whales to dancing spinner and spotted dolphins.
